Steven Gerrard in the running for Rangers return after Martin gets the sack.

Steven Gerrard is a leading candidate for a surprise reappointment to the Scottish giants following the announced departure of manager Russell Martin.

His unfortunate time in charge comes to a close

The coach's unsuccessful Ibrox tenure ended with the boss departing the Falkirk Stadium via a rear entrance and a waiting car after a 1-1 draw which left the Ibrox club 11 points from the peak of the premier division after just seven matches.

Incensed supporters had encircled the Rangers team bus in the stadium location, expressing their anger.

Rangers board hesitant to part with Martin

The Ibrox hierarchy had been reluctant to let go of the former Swansea boss, who was only hired in last month, despite vociferous complaints from the fanbase.

However, there was an understanding that the coach's role had become unsustainable.

The team have secured just a single victory of their Premiership matches to date, which has been combined with dismal displays in European competition.

Collectively, the coach won only five of 17 competitive matches, with a lackluster, unclear style of play that won over few admirers.

“Although rebuilding phases require some time, outcomes have not met the team's standards,” announced a Rangers statement on Sunday evening.

“Deputy manager Gill, and first-team staff member Williamson, will also be departing. Russell and his staff have put in tremendous effort throughout their tenure. We thank them for their dedication and send best wishes for the future.”

The former manager secured the championship with Rangers

The Liverpool legend won the title with the Glasgow club in that campaign, their only championship since over a decade ago.

His work in the Scottish league before then, coupled with struggles at the Birmingham club, brings doubts about his coaching abilities.

Yet he is held in high esteem by the very set of fans Rangers are keen to get back on side.

The rehiring of the former Reds star, who most recently coached in the Middle East, would prove hugely popular.

Gerrard will also be conscious of what limited opportunities he has to be a head coach in major divisions.

The departure will increase pressure on Kevin Thelwell

The manager's departure will increase pressure on Kevin Thelwell, the Ibrox director.

He had been very backing of the gaffer while disclosing a transfer outlay of £20m in the off-season.

The ex-manager had put pen to paper on a three-year contract.

His past roles

Martin, who had formerly managed MK Dons and Swansea, managed Southampton to a rise to the Premier League in that year after being brought in the previous summer.

He was dismissed last the end of the year after the the club secured just a single victory of their first 16 games.

He was named the interim boss's next in line in the summer, after the interim head coach had taken over from the fired the former manager in winter.
