Substantial Internet Disruption Hits Numerous Websites and Applications
A widespread online failure has impacted numerous online platforms and apps worldwide, with users reporting problems connecting to the web after problems at the web hosting service.
The disrupted services comprise Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, in addition to multiple Amazon-managed operations such as its primary shopping platform and the Ring device manufacturer.
In the UK, the financial institution Lloyds was impacted along with its affiliates the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were also reports of difficulties accessing the HM Revenue and Customs website on the start of the week. Also in the UK, several Ring users turned to networks to report their doorbells were failing.
In the UK alone, reports of issues on specific platforms reached the thousands for each platform.
Amazon reported that the outage began in the Atlantic coast of the United States at Amazon Web Services, a division that offers vital internet infrastructure for many firms, who utilize space on the company's servers. AWS is the biggest global web hosting system.
Shortly after late night (PDT) in the America (8am BST), officials reported “higher error rates and delays” for the cloud services in a region on the east coast of the United States. The ripple effect appeared to disrupt services worldwide, and the problem monitoring service indicating issues with the corresponding services in different parts of the world.
Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a tool that tracks online failures, further indicated a surge in issues on Monday morning, including several cases located in the state of Virginia, the region of the AWS US-East-1 zone where AWS said the outage began.
